When I give workshops, I almost always have someone come up to me and tell me how much they have spent on a spotting scope and camera and that every photo they take is utter crap. Also, the absolute worst time to get a new camera set up is right before you leave for a birding trip.

Richard Fried spent 2011 doing a New York State Big Year and managed to top the record of 350 species which was only set in 2008 by Scott Whittle. Richard totaled 352 species, an impressive number, by seeing almost all of the regularly occurring New York birds and the vast majority of the rarities that showed up in 2011.

A new book about the angelic-looking, identification-stumping birds of the oceans, rivers, and marshes has finally been published! Taxonomically, the guide follows Clement’s Checklist, the taxonomy used by eBird, though Cox also brings in other taxonomic opinions for some species, notably Sandwich Tern. Tern lovers rejoice!

In a warm Catalonian March (I was about to say Spanish, but among quite a few flags, I haven’t seen a single Spanish one), Barcelona was filled with sunlight and full of Rose-ringed and Monk Parakeets , two charming but alien and invasive species. Still, the bird isn’t too cooperative, glides low over the ridge and disappears behind it.

Turning off the asphalt, I enter the Deliblato Sands steppe, between the Danube and the Carpathian Mountains in the northeast of Serbia, where the first bird to greet me is a Northern Wheatear , followed by a Crested Lark. They are quite a rare breeding species in Serbia, declining as we speak, but one pair breeds nearby.

Lake Apopka Restoration Area in Lake County Florida is fast-becoming one of the best bird magnets in all of Florida. Fish populations plummeted and bird populations declined. And herein lies the key to Apopka’s potential to become one of the best, if not THE best, bird site in all of Florida.

Although a quite common bird of Norfolk, for me it was an attractive lure and a possibility of a lifer. The biggest surprise among the Breydon birds was one Little Egret , only the first of several I was going to see that day. Still, the tide was not nearly as high as we hoped for and all the birds were quite far away.

But, as with so many other species, these birds have been left to do their own whistle blowing. West Indian Whistling Ducks are the largest of the eight different whistling duck species. From perilously low numbers the population has rebounded now to approximately 500 birds on the island. They are also the rarest.
