Birding the Kruger Park (2): Bateleur area

10,000 Birds

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. This bird is represented in an ancient Egyptian hieroglyph. Can’t say that it is a particularly obvious name from seeing the bird.

Birding Senegal: Costco ads and Scissor-tailed Kites

10,000 Birds

Hannah Buschert started birding in college thanks to a required Biology of Birds course and a professor who included Sir David Attenborough’s Life of Birds to punctuate lessons. There are some places we want to see in our lives, birds we want to get, but we are also driven to visit places where we know few people who have gone.

10,000 Birds

This is just one of the usual blog posts from me, trying to get you to look at some of my bird photos via adding some semi-funny words. The Warbler Brewery: Canopy 2 Double India Pale Ale

10,000 Birds

For a second time in a month, we have a new double India Pale Ale featuring a species of bird famous for its appearance on the classic vintage Guinness advertisements drawn by artist John Gilroy in the 1930s and ‘40s. Two weeks ago, it was a pantless thunder goose – er, ostrich. Good birding and happy drinking!

Reddit Animals

For example, birds have hummingbirds which are tiny (~10g) and then ostriches which are massive (100kg). I’ve always wondered what animal or insect genus has the biggest difference between the smallest and biggest. But are there others, like spiders or fish? What do you think?

Birding Cape Town

10,000 Birds

In November 2018, I spent a few days birding in Cape Town, South Africa. While apparently not the safest of places, it is a great spot to see birds. The species is endangered – hopefully, their appeal to tourists and the resulting revenue will contribute to its protection. Here are some of my sightings.

15 Australian Birds (Episode 5)

10,000 Birds

According to Wikipedia, the national bird of Australia is the Emu – which I have not seen yet. Anyway, I was much keener to see this kingfisher than the Emu (who I consider to be a bit of an underprivileged ostrich). Duncan – in a 10,000 Birds post – apparently also thinks it would make a good national bird.
