Sandhill Cranes ( Grus canadensis ) are among the oldest living birds. million years old, over one and a half times older than the earliest remains of most living species of birds. Sandhill Cranes fly south for the winter and in their wintering areas they form flocks of over 10,000 birds. I’m looking forward to that!

We were at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge, of course, which is not only home to Falcated Duck, but many other birds. There is no shortage of Snow Geese, and no shortage of birds that feel right at home hanging out just a stone’s throw from you at the viewing platform. These birds look are abominations. Do you see?

Birds in the 24 states east of the Mississippi River are now protected from mass culls by a recent court ruling. Fish and Wildlife Service has periodically conducted culls, arguing that removing Double-crested Cormorants from the equation would help support populations of native fish. So the U.S. government will appeal.

Seeing 525 species was nice, as was the fact that I birded in four countries, nine of the fifty states in the United States, and fifty-one counties. You find them in the south from Florida to Texas and down into Mexico, occasionally as far north as the Carolinas in the east and up the Mississippi River as far north as Illinois. The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species.
