Birding northern Serbia, or a sudden bird tour

10,000 Birds

It was an unexpected bird tour, without too much planning and aimed at a few target species, of which we saw most, but the main one eluded us… Early morning, leaving the last houses behind… and a Little Owl awaits us on a traffic sign. Also along the Tamis River, our next hotspot was a fish farm in the Sakule Village. who dipped it).

Birding the Bear Mountain of Serbia

10,000 Birds

Usually, maize is on the menu, only occasionally carrion or dead trout from a nearby fish farm. We are in the Tara Mountain in western Serbia, ranging from 1,000-1,500 m / 3,000-5,000 ft above sea level. The next morning, through Yellowhammers and Eurasian Skylarks singing all around me, I went birding.

Going Medieval: Waterfowling the Two Towers of Serbia

10,000 Birds

In the chill morning of late January, I am driving east of Belgrade towards the Two Towers section of the Danube and the best waterfowling bonanza in the whole of Serbia. Who even spots a Woodsand without deliberately searching for birds? Who even spots a Woodsand without deliberately searching for birds?

St. Michael’s summer birding along the Danube in Serbia

10,000 Birds

We were heading to the Djerdap (Iron Gates) Gorge National Park, stretching along the south bank of the Danube in eastern Serbia, to do the 400 km / 250 mi bird tour interconnecting possibly the very best sites around Belgrade reachable within a day. The deep beech forest of Djerdap was still full of birds.

Fog, drizzle and four road blockades

10,000 Birds

Pied Avocet by Boris Okanovic Next we find ourselves at the famous fish farm in the village of Sakule. Why should something so unimaginable in Germany be possible in Serbia? It is getting hot in the sun, but this place is bursting with birds, I cannot decide where to look! Protest indeed!
