I am parked at the bridge over the Reva Pond in the suburb of Belgrade, Serbia, mere 150 metres away from the nearest buildings behind me, but facing the fascinating undeveloped 1.2 The water is misty-golden and the fishes are all glossy in the early morning sun. Hence, in land-locked Serbia, it has been recorded only three times: in 1857, one was shot at the Morava River; in 1993, one was observed by a bird photographer Rastko Aleksandrov at the Centa fish farm, north of Belgrade; and in 2012, a team of Croat and Serbian ornithologists found one at the Belgrade city rubbish dump.

These days I am busy with something called the “avitourism product“ of Belgrade, Serbia. By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once. Pygmy Cormorant – winter (it breeds in Serbia, but overwinters in Belgrade).

Wigeons are only migrants and not a breeding species in Serbia and August is a bit too early for any longer distance duck movements. Among them are 3 to 4 breeding pairs of White-tailed Eagles, the largest density per square mile anywhere in Serbia. Only two years ago, in the spring 2014, Serbia had catastrophic floods.

A month ago I was in the Iron Gates National Park in eastern Serbia, where one Black Woodpecker flew across the road, right in front of us (proving it is an extant taxon). Consequently, my first local patch becomes a largish Danube River floodzone opposite to Belgrade (Serbia) city centre (cover photo: April 1992). It is a winter trap for rare gulls and that is where I found the 4th Great Black-backed Gull for Serbia this winter, as well as the 6th Pallas’s Gull two winters ago.

They lay eggs in late January or early February, and the Statehood Day of Serbia is in mid-February. The next spring had a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall, leading to very low water levels and dried up backwaters in a fish spawning season. And the birds moved to the island. The catch is, the station often pumps some small fish into the pool, hence the jolly bird party. The Dalmatian Pelicans line the lake shore, especially by the small beach opposite Limnochori village, where local fisherman tie their flat-bottomed boats and, after fishing – feed the birds with small fish, not worth taking to the market.

Next to the Ratno Island Reserve, a group of about 30 adults and kids were watching their first White-tailed Eagles , a cooperative young eagle even pulled fish out of the river and playful Common Kingfishers were chasing each other, fishing or just showing off.

Wetland Halfway between bustling Belgrade and sleepy Zrenjanin, River Tamis floodzone contains abundant oxbow lakes (turned into fish farms) and salt marshes filled with birds. Yet, nothing of the calmness of my previous visits remained: a week ago, the reserve was recommended in some angling magazine and I found parked cars and a dozen people, swish-swooshing their fishing rods. The White-tailed Eagle is one of the easiest birds to observe in Belgrade, Serbia (almost guaranteed). There are about ten pairs around the city. One pair even breeds on the island at the very confluence of the Sava and the Danube rivers, less than a mile from the central city square.
