Back when I was a kid growing up in California’s San Mateo County in the 60s and 70s, my family would occasionally drive 45 minutes west and south to Bean Hollow State Beach. As for birds, well, I wasn’t paying much attention back then. Still, I have very fond memories of the times we spent there. I like this guy.

There are beautiful beaches, a plethora of amazing food and drinks, a multitude of family fun locations, a world-renowned zoo, and one of the biggest birding festivals in the US. My family visited San Diego every year as part of a Disneyland-SoCal Road trip to escape the rainy Christmases at home near Portland, Oregon.

Back in Southern California

Anytime I travel, I do what it takes to get in some birding. After all, the best way to find new birds is to look in new places. However, I rarely get to travel with family or friends who share my obsession. Birding being best in the early morning, I get up before they do, and try to be back by breakfast — their breakfast.
