The ornithologists considered plumage, voice, and genetics in making their determinations; birds had to differ from known species in in at least two of those qualities to be considered new. The 15th is grouped in the Bucconidae family and appears similar to a Striolated Puffbird.

These rails were featured in a 10,000 Birds post a few weeks ago. The Slaty-breasted Wood-Rail , Aramides saracura , was seen as the light was fading over the Botanical Gardens (Jardim do Botanico) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The preening bird was much larger and I have made a presumption that he is the male. Kiss someone now.

Enter the Silktail , an odd little bird found only on two islands, Taveuni and Vanua Levu, in Fiji. The affinities of this small dark blue bird with a white tail has been a longstanding mystery for taxonomists for a long time. Indeed it was part of that family.
