Second, they occupy an astonishing variety of habitats from temperate Araucaria forests in Chile to alpine scree in New Zealand to seasonally flooded rainforests in Brazil to rocky sea cliffs in Australia. However, they do not occur evenly across their familial distribution.

The Slaty-breasted Wood-Rail , Aramides saracura , was seen as the light was fading over the Botanical Gardens (Jardim do Botanico) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Despite female birds of other families often being larger than the male, I cannot find anything to suggest that there is a gender difference in wood rails.

The Hyacinth Macaw is more than just another pretty face; these birds are social with strong family values. The Hyacinth Macaw doesn’t start a family until it is seven years old. They like to fly in pairs or groups and in the evening they come together in big groups to roost in a favorite ‘dormitory’ tree.

Primarily, Lapwings are an Old World family with over 20 species including Australasia’s Masked Lapwing , Asia’s Yellow-wattled Lapwing and the Red-wattled Lapwing of the Middle East. Masked Lapwing Africa is the spiritual home of the Vanellus family, boasting as many as 14 species including the abundant Crowned Lapwing.

Like a shy stepchild, it’s always eclipsed by the wonders of Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, etc. Jon Fjeldså’s contributions include many of the ducks, yellow-finches, and many other families where his images of Birds of the High Andes could be used. This unfortunately happens with the large Tanager (Thraupidae) family here.

Really, all that has changed is that the Pantanal in Brazil and Cocos Island in the Pacific have joined them. Given that they are a family of obscure deepwater whales that are very hard to see, I would imagine this is a contender for one that will never leave my list. A beaked whale. Any beaked whale. Is a Coua a bird or a city in Brazil? Pardalotes are actually their own family, and a family entirely endemic to Australia. Insofar as they relate to other bird families, they are perhaps closest to the thornbills, another family that is mostly Australian but reaches as far as Thailand and Fiji. What a treat!

Several, like the mocker and the hummer, were members of families I hadn’t encountered before, either. If, instead of seven trips to Kenya, I’d done just one, and gone instead to Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Japan, China and New Guinea, it would almost certainly have passed the 6,000 mark. Fantastic!

Indeed it was part of that family. Until then the fantails were a family of rather personable flycatcher-like birds ranging from India to New Zealand. The family had a single genus and was very conservative in body shape, basically a short dumpy bird with a long fan-able tail and a bucketload of energy.

One of the largest species of hummingbird with a very unique and un-hummingbird-like tail, it is found in Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay where it can actually be remarkably common. Found in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, this bird is called the “tufted flower kisser” in some of the areas that it is found.
