On Sunday June 10th there were cyclonic winds across the whole of the southern part of Western Australia and due to the fact that all of the power is still above ground there were significant outages. The Bauhinia bush below is the favourite shelter for the finches.

Even the narrow shade under a gate is a great place to seek shelter from the sun on a hot day. The Wedge-tailed Eagle has an unmistakenable wedge-shaped tail and is often seen on roadkill around Australia. Throw in a few hundred termite mounds and you have a great environment for birds.

It rained both nights at Saddle Creek, but we made use of the shelter and it did cool it down slightly! We could see there was more rain closer to the Western Australia border and we had to traverse a flooded creek along the highway on returning to Kununurra the next day.

One of the most camouflaged birds in Australia is the Tawny Frogmouth and we often hear them at night when we are camping in the bush, but the chance of seeing them is less likely. This time we decided to make use of the Rest Area and use the shelter and shade in case of a torrential downpour, which had occurred earlier in the day.

The wind was just too much and they sheltered together in the vegetation at the high tide mark. Pied Oystercatcher chick sheltering from the wind. They travel through the dunes where there is shade among the vegetation and some protection from predators. The Pied Oystercatcher chicks are also quite well camouflaged in the vegetation.

This cyclone has been named Cyclone Iggy and is a dominant circle on our satellite image of Western Australia. Shorebirds on Cable Beach We found ourselves in one of the palm frond shelters for some time whilst it decided if it was going to just drizzle or really rain. There were a few rubbish bins and a shelter with a picnic table and benches. Returning to the rest area we were soon set up under the shelter with the storm all around us, but mostly raining in the distance and the occasional flurry of wind. The landscape was quite spectacular with the approaching storm as we attempted to outrun it!

They sheltered the chicks under their wings and when there are only two chicks one parent can do this, but with three it seems to be more of a shared duty. They had nested closer to the reef in earlier years, but the construction of a beach shelter just prior to the breeding season one year changed their decision on a suitable nest site.

Pied Oystercatcher chick sheltering under an adult bird. We observed the adult Pied Oystercatchers finding small creatures in the soft sand and feeding them to the chicks. At no other time do we observe the Pied Oystercatchers feeding from the soft sand. Clumsy Pied Oystercatcher chicks not long out of the nest.

The Red-capped Plover Charadrius ruficapillus is a very cute shorebird that is often seen scurrying along the shoreline around Australia. Three day old Red-capped Plover Sometimes a chick runs looking for shelter and it has no choice but to use what ever it can find on a big open beach. The estimated population is 95 000.

The female Pied Oystercatcher was guarding and sheltering the Pied Oystercatcher chicks when we visited two days after hatching and the egg shell had been removed from the nest. Wallabies were still digging in the salty ground and there was shade and shelter for them inside the crater. It was still damp and salty in some areas and had only recently dried up. We walked along the coastal trail rather than along the promenade or beach, because that way we were sheltered from the fine drizzle that soon reached us. The National Park is unusual because it offers very few facilities compared to most, but there is a sealed road right into the small car park and a shade shelter with a table and chairs and information about the park. Wallaby seeks shelter beside an excavator. The Poo Ponds were very productive and the wildlife was making the most of the water available and the shade provided by the excavating equipment. This wallaby had been sitting in the bucket as we approached and then hopped out and remained in the shade near the tracks.

There is a small shelter and picnic bench at this location and depending on visibility you may or may not be able to see the coast! The weather has not been very warm at all in this part of Australia despite it being summer and we have been fortunate to have not been affected by the awful bush-fires.
