Pied Oystercatcher chicks two weeks on….

Tropical Cyclone Iggy

This cyclone has been named Cyclone Iggy and is a dominant circle on our satellite image of Western Australia. They will be seeking protection where they can and they will return as soon as the rain eases. We have had a wet week in Broome with a tropical low to our north and further down the coast there is a cyclone.

A Pied Oystercatcher family

Well, basically it is a good area for putting a nest as there is ample food nearby and the dunes offer protection and good views of incoming predators. Why would Pied Oystercatchers been keen to use an area with all this activity? Now it just needs to get the strength and feather production complete on its wings and it can fly from danger.

Pied Oystercatcher parenting

They sheltered the chicks under their wings and when there are only two chicks one parent can do this, but with three it seems to be more of a shared duty. They had nested closer to the reef in earlier years, but the construction of a beach shelter just prior to the breeding season one year changed their decision on a suitable nest site.

Sydney Harbour National Park

This park, which protects scattered headlands, bays and islands of natural bush, is located around the entrance to Sydney Harbour. Dobroyd Head, the section in Balgowlah near where my grandparents live, protects one of the larger parts of the park, and is a hidden gem of birdwatching in Sydney. And a blaze of wildlflowers too.
