The Emu Dromaius novaehollandiae is Australia’s largest bird standing at up to 2 metres (6 foot 6 inches) tall. In actual fact we saw one take on an electric fence over 20 years ago in the Murchison area of Western Australia and it persisted until it got through. Emu assessing the fence.

The male of this pair of Pied Oystercatchers always appears to take on more of the protecting duties, but we also know he is an old bird. The Masked Lapwing is one of the noisiest shorebirds in the north, especially when they are protecting a nest or young. Returning along the road to leave the airport the Masked Lapwing became very protective of her nest and spread her wings out wide over the nest area and became increasingly noisy. The adult Pied Oystercatcher that is sitting on the eggs will lay as flat as possible to protect the eggs. We really don’t like the presence of Black Kites along the beach when the Pied Oystercatchers are breeding. They present a real threat to the birds and have been known to take young chicks.

Our observations recently have shown that the adult Pied Oystercatchers are roosting amongst the shorebirds where possible and it may well protect the juvenile Pied Oystercatchers. Two of the most popular beaches for shorebirds roosting have also been the nest sites for two pairs of Pied Oystercatchers this breeding season.
