Urban Birding in San Diego

We would walk the Pacific Beach promenade, see Shamu at Sea World (this is before Blackfish, mind you), and sample delicious Mexican food in Old Town San Diego. Riding around Mission Bay and back to the headquarters along the San Diego River can garner us about sixty-five species over the 10-mile bike ride.

The Eurasian Collared-Dove Explosion: Coming to a Town Near You!

This is an animated map made from Christmas Bird Count data of Eurasian Collared-Dove sightings from 1987 through 1997 2. The northwestern spread of this non-native species made it to my yard a few years ago. I am always alarmed when I see rapid expansion of a non-native species of any kind.

Birding the Kruger Park (1): Skukuza area

Inside the camps, you are allowed to walk around freely – outside, this privilege is reserved for the animals. There are quite a few raptor species around Skukuza. Most likely, the devil, not god created this species. Skukuza is the largest camp and the administrative center of Kruger Park. It is also documented on video.
