One of the most impressive aspects of the Tropical Rainforests is the incredible array of sounds produced by animals. Interior forest animals, from invertebrates to large mammals, rely on sounds to communicate; the forest is so dense that visual cues are meaningless. I thought the mammal I was hearing was sitting in one place.

In those few days in the park, I observed about 35 birds, including European Honey Buzzard , Grey-headed Woodpecker and the numerous Mistle Thrushes and Eurasian Bullfinches , and half a dozen mammals, European Pine Marten among them. The Brown Bear remains my nemesis mammal. Yet, not the bear, I’ll have to return for it.

A dusty-red road leads me through Marico bushveld deeper into the 750 square kilometers large wilderness of the Madikwe Game Reserve – the 4th largest reserve in South Africa, home to 350 bird and 66 mammal species, some 4 hours’ drive from Johannesburg. but that's pretty much it for mammals. I think I heard an owl once last winter. We do have a possum and a raccoon that live somewhere on the property. And I have found one small dead garden snake in the street. Lots of squirrels, chipmunks, deer, rabbits. Idk, generic store brand bird lol. Ocassional robins, sparrows, crows.

But on the second night we went on foot in a small group and saw a lot more, including flying frogs, a Common Banded Civet and best of all a brief view of a Buffy Fish Owl ! Or nothing big at least. The Channel Islands have all sorts of species and subspecies that are endemic to the islands, including mammals, reptiles, plants, and of course birds, many of which are nonmigratory. I can’t finish this post without mentioning marine mammals. Never have I seen so many Rufous-crowned Sparrows, they are thick out here.
