So we just had a baby owl sadly die in our backyard. We just noticed the owl in it yesterday. Im honored that all these animals choose our backyard to live but im very sad that so many of them dont make it. It was in a hole in our oaktree that we think a woodpecker made weeks ago.

The HBW entry on the Collared Scops Owl is disappointingly short, given that this is an extremely cute and attractive bird and that the entry is attributed to 9 (!) Given the small size of the owl (23-25 cm), the eBird characterization as a medium-sized owl is also a bit strange.

I have been thinking about this for awhile after I saw some people online with things like a pet skunk and even someone with a barn owl. I have always held the belief that most animals should be in the wild because that’s their natural habitat and they can get the stimulation and environment they need.

The Philadelphia Metro Wildlife Center in Norristown covers four Pennsylvania counties (including Philadelphia) and takes in over 3000 animals a year. After a similar procedure, Moya’s watch-me-pull-a-rabbit-out-of-my-hat trick produced a fuzzy nestling Eastern Screech Owl. Sounds like a sitcom!

The Japanese Scops Owl has the same word in its name ( Otus semitorques ), but I could not find an explanation for that either. The other is the Crested Finchbill. The Latin species name is semitorques , which means something like “half-twisted” – but I have no idea why.
