Yesterday I saw two small ducklings in a group of ducks and geese, but their mom didn’t seem to be around them or attentive. Do ducks and geese have a sense of community together if they become familiar with each other? Can someone explain a bit more about duck behavior with their babies?

The 118 th Christmas Bird Count (CBC) began yesterday and I’m sure many of you have at least one count scheduled in the next few weeks. It’s entirely possible that I’ve just given some adventurous craft brewer a really bad idea, though it certainly wouldn’t be the first or even most questionable use of animal ingredients in brewing.

This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. Nearly 30,000 of these acres is set aside as dry wilderness habitat for other birds, animals and other various living creatures. There was also a small raft of Ruddy Ducks.

Last month I accompanied Seagull Steve to South Florida for two weeks, which yielded some excellent birds…we missed the Fork-tailed Flycatcher on Big Pine Key, but that’s because we were on the Dry Tortugas, so we aren’t complaining.

The bird takes a mouth-ful of water and then forces the water through them, trapping the planktonic organisms which it eats. The birds were divided into groups, those scheduled for release that day and those that needed keeping for a little longer, so they had to be kept separate. The lamellae are used by prions for filter-feeding.

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. This is an Urban Refuge ! Why would you open it up to hunting?

It gets interesting here, because the bar manager had no idea it was a rare bird and was just helping out a bird that had flown into a window. There were a lot of birds about at this early hour and we were very surprised to see seven Magpie Geese fly by. He had no idea it was a rare bird and subsequently buried it.

Last month we decided to head north to go camping and birding and top up the 2018 Year List. It is now very hot and dry inland and the temperature does not drop much at night, so you go to bed early and get up early like the animals and birds. We were woken by birds at 4am every day, so we were inside our tent early each night!

As it turns out, many of those very birds that I had hoped to find, all had the same idea, and had moved out of the park as well. I would have to say the most common bird in the park, must be the Common Raven. We picked this as much for the location as its chance for some decent birds. You know, the Bison, Elk, Bears and Wolves.

We have just been away camping and birding and had an amazing time. It is only a short drive in over a small hill to the bird hide at the billabong. Magpie Geese, Purple Swamphen, Brolga and Pied Heron near the boardwalk The bird hide is shaded well and a nice breeze blows through it to save you from the dry 40c (105f) September days.
