A birding friend of mine listed nesting White-headed Woodpeckers ( Picoides albolarvatus ) on the local Shasta County listserve so I thought I’d head up to Lassen Park to check it out. White-headed Woodpecker Male. The female White-headed Woodpecker looks like the male without the red occipital patch.

It did go a bit slower than I was hoping for, however, I came to Costa Rica with 957, and started to collect my birds like an Acorn Woodpecker collects its nuts. Plumaged like various other small female hummingbirds from North America, the lady Snowcap is pale gray below, pale glittering green above, and with a tail that flashes bits of white. The female isn’t quite so unreal but is still a cool little bird in her own right. Snowcaps were there too, we had four or five, and most at close range.

Iberian Green Woodpecker, Madrid, Spain. Mexico has a good number of greenish or rusty Woodpeckers. All my Woodpeckers have been among the black and white jobs with small patches of red, orange, or yellow. But the Great Swallow-tailed Swift is one of the largest Swifts in North America. I think all Swifts are cool.

Baird’sSandpipers can only be seen here in August and September, as they stop on their way from the Arctic Circle to southern South America; they do not normally visit central Mexico on its way back north. Some lucky Golden-fronted Woodpecker or Curve-billed Thrasher must have been feeling very satisfied.

Cardinal Woodpecker.
