The new series was masterminded by Chanticleer founder Paul Steiner, who was lauded on his death 19 years later for his “brilliant idea of creating bird guides with photographs” and organizing them visually. And now we have the third iteration in Audubon’s guide book history: National Audubon Society Birds of North America.

A Corn Crake in New York State!

I drove up to where now only two cars were parked, and saw Steve and Isaac, two New York birding friends, stood in the middle of the median. In New York State! There has been some discussion about the history of Corn Crakes in North America, and I expect there will be more if the bird sticks. Or by a cat!

The next day many New York birders celebrated Independence Day by mobbing the flats where they all dipped. It is a bird of the Pacific coast of North and South America, breeding in western Mexico and southern California. In the winter it is found across a vast swath of the Pacific coast of South America.
