The end of July marks the end of the Least Tern’s ( Sterna antillarum ) nesting season in Florida. Young Least Terns , some still begging for food, begin to appear on Florida beaches and will soon continue their flight south eastern South America. But making it to a flying age in Florida is an accomplishment in itself.

Even in the Brazilian Amazon, I’ve never seen this many whistling ducks together–there were sixty at a manmade lake behind the Brevard Community College near Titusville, Florida. I don’t get a lot of life birds in North America any more, but this confiding little gent offered himself up to the list: a Florida Scrub-Jay.

Its debatable which one is a better bird for Florida. I may now have the distinction of being the only birder to have found two of this species in North America – not bad for a guy who hasn’t been blessed with a great deal of luck at finding major rarities. To be honest, this was actually a bit of a downer for me.

I’ve been learning to band birds at the South Florida Bird Observatory. Of course I’ve seen these birds in Florida many times but I never really appreciated just how big these nocturnal bucket mouths are. These are the largest nightjars in North America, significantly larger than Whip-poor-will or any of the nighthawks.

Over the last weekend, I was at Lake Kissimmee in Florida, observing Snail Kites at an area kites were not present or rare just a few years ago. The threat of extinction of such iconic Florida bird prompted State and Federal agencies to find solutions to stop and reverse the declining trend. Kites now nest there and are fairly common.
