First off, Audubon of Florida reports that counts indicate more Roseate Spoonbills are nesting in Florida Bay (between the mainland and the Keys) this year than last year, although those numbers are still lower than in the last decade. Note how the male retracts his talons as he approaches the female to copulate… protecting his mate from those razor sharp claws. This pair copulated several times while I was observing.

Black Terns do not breed or over-winter in Florida, they merely migrate through on their way to Central and South America. I adore all protected areas along the barrier islands. I’ve seen Forster’s Terns and Common Terns , but one particular species was fast becoming a nemesis bird: the Black Tern. It was maddening.
