Somehow, the northernmost redstart in the Americas didn’t receive the same treatment. Appropriate appellations should respect the birds, not 19th century naturalists and their friends and family.

Towhees are large, ground-hugging sparrows that occur only in North America. Earlier this month, I came across a family of Spotted Towhees (Olive-backed) with a couple of other strange aspects. They belong to either the Pipilo or Melozone genera, or perhaps both, as their taxonomy is still a point of contention.

I am puzzled as to why Gulls and Terns are almost passed over, with less than two pages of text devoted to a family description and only six species accounts (four gulls, two terns). Family follows family with no page break, making this section a little dense. Woodpeckers are a family of focus for Tuttle-Adams.

The Trogon family (and order, since the order only includes one family) is quite widespread, being found in all the tropical (and some subtropical) regions of the world. It is also fascinating to see how similar Old World trogons look to their New World relatives, right down to the same flamboyant color patterns.

Horned Larks breed widely over North America, including up here in the High Arctic. They are everywhere right now, as the families make their way from uplands down to the water’s edge. These ones had a head start, nesting right near the shore. But in the right light, they glow! Calling for mom.
