Birding Tradition: the New Year’s Day List

My pre-breakfast list was wildfowl dominated, the 10 species I saw ranging from Black-necked Swans to the endemic Falkland Islands Flightless Steamer Duck. The latter are great bruisers of ducks, built like a small battle ship. With bulk like that, it’s no wonder that they gave up flying long ago. as they sheered into the wind.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of August 2016)

In the interim, I hung around Lake Ontario watching Mallards oppressing American Black Ducks. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was an easy one to choose as it was his first albatross, a Black-footed Albatross off the coast of California. These remote islands, some more than 1,000 miles from Honolulu, are home to huge globally-significant colonies of Laysan and Black-footed Albatross, among many others.
