The history of Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa is a slightly unusual one. It is a good place for South African birders, as several species are found here and nowhere else in South Africa, and it holds a small number of endemics that it shares with the Mozambique lowlands. Tembe Elephant Park is a mosaic of savannah and forest.

The Sanetti Plateau in Ethiopia is a one of Africa’s greatest birding locations. As you drive along you see plenty of mole rats too, if you like mammals. I’m a big fan of the antelopes, a group that is most commonly associated with Africa but which also occurs in Asia and, if you stretch the term to be cladistically meaningful, Europe and North America. By this I mean applying the term antelope to cover all of the family Bovidae, which would include the sheep, goats and ox.

Africa has a superabundance of antelopes, and one of the cutest and most unusual is the Klipspringer. My only sighting until this year had been a distant speck on a far off koppie in Kenya, but this pair (they live in pairs) came very close to my safari vehicle in Madikwe in South Africa. The males have horns.

Jeff Gordon and I were wandering around the seriously disturbed habitat behind the airport hotel we stayed in outside of Budapest when a bizarre mammal about the size of an opossum crossed the path in front of us.
