When you think of invasives, you think of the birds that have been helped by human beings to get where they are, such as House Sparrow or European Starling. Come September most of the summer seabird people had left, but there were a small number of seabirds still breeding and so I stayed behind for three years to continue their monitoring and do the migrant landbird surveys, as well as the Great White Shark surveys. It was astonishing, like a game drive in the savannah of Africa.

In terms of breeding behavior, starlings are a diversified group – some use helpers, others do not. Hopefully, the winter time in Shanghai gives the Black-faced Buntings some time to relax from the challenges of the breeding season.
