Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa – it was established in 1895. According to a local African superstition that I just made up, it is not harmful to eat toxically colored birds if you eat them in the dark. Colonial history reflected in bird names. Hornbills of South Africa

At some point, my stock of memories of birds seen outside of China will be used up, I am afraid. But for now, I still have the hornbills I saw in South Africa a few years ago. Even more than the African Grey Hornbill, they are forest birds. Probably Wikipedia is more specialized on birds than the HBW.

Perhaps the most curious thing about the Great Spotted Cuckoo is its distribution, for it is both a non-breeding Palearctic migrant to Africa, and a trans-Africa migrant.

Birding Shanghai in November 2022

I did not find much about this bird online except for a paper with the exciting title “A new quill mite Torotrogla emberizae sp. Fortunately for the buntings, they seem to detect most cuckoo eggs smuggled in (75% in one study). Maybe there is some justice in this world after all. Better safe than sorry.
