One strange thing about Chongming is the inevitable presence of people fishing. Not professionally – these people come in SUVs and probably never recapture their gas money from the fish they catch (though come to think of it, neither do I with my bird photos). of catching extremely small fish.

Both pelicans have a very specialized foraging strategy that depends on abundant fish near the surface. They dive-plunge to scoop-in fish in schools with its long bill and expandable throat pouch. Changes in fish abundance and location near the surface has caused catastrophic die-offs in the Peruvian Pelican.

This year it was an American Crow ( Corvus brachyrhyncus ), though at home in Albany, New York, it’s just as likely to be – and has been in the past – a Fish Crow ( Corvus ossifragus ). But which species of crow is our Old Crow – Fish or American? Well, it’s happened again – my first bird of the year was a crow.

Tragically, I never saw any birds near the nest later on – I guess they abandoned it, decided to quit procreating, or just got eaten by some other bird or cat. But indeed they vanish somewhere once the people pretending to try and catch fish appear. The male at work.

Set in an abandoned oil refinery where wildlife is slowly regaining control save for the desperate attempts of golfers to retain all eighteen holes, industrial ghosts loom over rolling freshwater lakes bordered by fifty foot tall trees. About one hundred yards away an Anhinga surfaced with a freshly skewered fish.
