A pair of flyover American Black Ducks , a flock of Green-winged Teal winging west way out over the ocean, and surprisingly, all three of our expected falcon species were all seen relatively early in the morning. Osprey are nice but after awhile you wish one would be a different species. The birders kept coming too!

The shallows are full of ducks in eclipse, a real puzzle that requires a bit of time and a sharp eye – something you usually reserve for warblers and such. This leads me to my third twitch for the celebrated Falcated Duck ( Anas falcata ) at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in January of 2012. The next rare bird that I was able to chase came a couple of years later in January 2016. This was a no-brainer. I found it within 30 minutes. These twitches were all lifers for me.

Many sad and unfortunate things occurred in 2016, but the birding was good. I think this might be my best bird of 2016. 5) White-winged Duck. I saw Painted Wolves again, my favourite species ever. The Orange-fronted Parakeet is a critically endangered species that I came agonisingly close to seeing but didn’t. Singapore is a densely populated city-state which still manages to protect a number of species. A new duck! And an Eastern Spot-billed Duck.

By the time we had arrived at the local train station we had seen numerous bird species and every field appeared to have several Common Pheasant feeding in the late afternoon. The other prominent species along the river bank was Common Redshank and they were a bird we saw regularly over the time that we were in the UK. Tufted Duck.

Or, a Tufted Duck or Cackling Goose. Ducks, swans, and geese may initially appear easy to identify. And, the whole question of subspecies, which in the Northeast tends to focus on the Cackling Goose, but which I’m sure is a topic of fascination with other waterfowl species in all other parts of the world.

We had hoped to add a few more bird species at the Poo Ponds. The expected Australian Pelicans were there and a handful of Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Eurasian Coot , Masked Lapwings and an Olive-backed Oriole was calling continuously. We had a list of 92 bird species for the day.

At the far end of the pool there were Pacific Black Ducks , Grey Teal , Hardheads , Australasian Grebes , White-faced Herons , White-necked Heron and a surprise visit the following morning of Australian Wood Ducks , which were the first for us for 2016. The Australian Wood Duck left later that day and were not seen again!
