Not long after the compilation gets underway starting with the order Anseriformes , we come to Aix sponsa and the compiler asks – hopefully – “Any Wood Ducks?” Now, Wood Ducks are somewhat uncommon in eastern New York in winter and after an inevitable few seconds of silence, some smirking wisecracker pipes up with “Do wooden duck counts?”

Pintail Duck was another sneaky bird! There was a duck upside down at Freiston Shore and its tail feathers were not the same as the others! Finally it turned itself the right way up and was a Pintail Duck ! The same experience was to be had at Rutland Water, so watch out for the sneaky upside down ducks! Pintail Duck.

As a birder, this 72 minute documentary film about the Duck Stamp Contest didn’t accomplish what I was hoping it might – get people excited about the Duck Stamp, or at least wildlife conservation. That being said, in preparation of opening day judging of the Duck Stamp Contest, the judges were informed of the contest rules.

Lake Cuitzeo is Mexico’s second largest lake, and its uniformly shallow waters make it a powerful magnet for dabbling ducks and shorebirds. Back in 2017 I was shocked to find only 15 ducks over the course of the morning, when I had hoped to find hundreds, or even thousands. This was once my lake. But in Mexico you certainly can.

One small thing that made me happy this weekend was the return of Long-tailed Ducks to our lakeshore. That observation hits home this week, but I stand with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who pointed out that the little things are infinitely the most important, not just in solving mysteries but also in our daily lives. Can Snowy Owls be far behind?

Three owls, Common Eiders , Lesser Black-backed Gulls , an Orange-crowned Warbler , a wide variety of dabbling ducks: the list goes on and on! Corey had a pleasing plethora of good birds from which to choose his Best Bird of the Weekend from this week. But of all of them his first Long-eared Owl in nearly three years is his choice.
