As a birder, this 72 minute documentary film about the Duck Stamp Contest didn’t accomplish what I was hoping it might – get people excited about the Duck Stamp, or at least wildlife conservation. The film follows several contestants on their journey to win what is described as the “Olympics of Wildlife Art.”

Not long after the compilation gets underway starting with the order Anseriformes , we come to Aix sponsa and the compiler asks – hopefully – “Any Wood Ducks?” Now, Wood Ducks are somewhat uncommon in eastern New York in winter and after an inevitable few seconds of silence, some smirking wisecracker pipes up with “Do wooden duck counts?”

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of April 2016)

I was privileged to help my mother-in-law see her first Common Loon in its summer finery, but for me, the highlight amidst the myriad ducks and grebes was a new regiment of Ruddy Ducks in the waterfowl mix at Conesus Lake. Best of all, your birds next weekend may be even better than what this weekend offered. How about you?

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of April 2016)

I spent several hours of an otherwise excellent weekend dipping multiple times on a rare ABA Tufted Duck. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a cooperative Blue-gray Gnatcatcher at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge that contentedly foraged while Corey digiscoped. That’s a win in my book.
