I started afforesting our church lot in 2016, just after we were able to fence it. My 2016 efforts began with a generous gift of 43 seedlings from a local botanical garden, representing just the sort of diversity that most reforestation efforts lack. But someday, when the trees are tall enough, I hope to leave them all.

Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was any of the three R ed-cockaded Woodpeckers he saw in the pine woods of Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area in central Florida on Friday during the “Central Florida Specialties” trip for the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival. Such a rare bird is always a good sighting!

Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a cooperative Blue-gray Gnatcatcher at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge that contentedly foraged while Corey digiscoped. Fortunately, Conesus Lake holds all manner of superb waterfowl, including more Common Loons in breeding plumage than I’ve ever seen at one time. That’s a win in my book.

Of the 26 species of warblers and 110+ species of bird he saw this weekend none caught his fancy quite like an extraordinarily Chestnut-sided Warbler which foraged within scant feet for several minutes at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Corey was pleased, pleased, pleased to meet that wood-warbler, his Best Bird of the Weekend. How about you?

I saw my first migratory Eastern Phoebe of 2019 this morning at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. 2016 – 18 March. Actually, I saw my first five phoebes there, perhaps the most I ever saw in one location for my first of the season. For me, it is now officially spring! 2019 – 17 March. 2018 – 30 March. 2017 – 12 March.

In Western Australia there has been a project running for several years now to beautify grain silos and several have now been painted with native wildlife.
