Talking of gulls, I had a new meeting with an old acquaintance, the Black-headed Gull ringed in 2013 in the north of the country that I already met twice in 2015 and now again – I even recognized its ring because the combination of letters sounds a bit like “Yahoo”. Peregrine Falcon nests. The winter of 2015-16 was “exceptional” with record numbers of 144 LWfG for Greece and 118 for Kerkini alone (55 of them juveniles) (Source: “The Lesser White-fronted Goose in Greece” by Alehandra Demertzi, Christos Angelidis, Danae Portolou, Manolia Vougioukalou, Eleni Makrigianni & Theodoros Naziridis, 2017).

The real cheese comes in the form of Pinnated and Least Bitterns , Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture , Nicaraguan Grackles , Nicaraguan Seed-Finch , and chances at everything from Jabiru to Aplomado Falcon. We identified quite a few bonus birds and I don’t know how many year birds I picked up but must be close to 600 species for 2015.

Since I last wrote about the crossing in 2015 we have visited every year and as you can imagine there is always something new to see. There were other raptors including Brown Falcon and Brown Goshawk. The crossing itself is still holding up, so you can walk down the dusty track and observe the bird-life up and down stream.

Nathan O’Reilly’s most memorable bird was one many birders from New York State and beyond drove to see in 2015. The Bald Eagle was flying upside-down with talons up trying to ward off the small white falcon! The Northern Waterthrush was my first of the year, a beautiful bird with it’s tail pumping action.

I was told that a few minutes ago a Peregrine Falcon had been seen on one of the islands, but I couldn’t find it. Ringed Parakeet , my last year bird of 2015 and the ultimate London bird. Another nice bird is the Common Shelduck , a bird I more usually associate with the coast and estuaries. Common Moorhen.

The 2015 Queens County Bird Club Big Sit at Fort Tilden on Saturday was a rousing success! In addition to having more participants, we had more bird species, 76, beating out last year’s inaugural effort by two whole species. The hawk flight was not large but we did see quite a few species of raptors.

The binding also appears to be strong; I’m able to open to Prairie Falcon in Colorado , pressing open the pages so they lie flat, without fear that I will crack the spine. (It’s I did find some photographs used in both guides, notably the impressive male Bald Eagle and the 2015 ABA Bird of the Year, Green Heron.

Interestingly, in April 2015 , I was here with a group of international birding guides, at the embankment south of the Strymonas Bridge, when one of them spotted a Scrub Robin for a moment. I do have experience with this species from Bodrum, Turkey; it is daring, bold and cocky, and is impossible to forget. I’m in Greece, after all.
