Magpie Geese breeding near Broome

In early 2014 the rainfall was good and flooded the main highway south from Broome and made for some excellent birding from your car. The area remained flooded for several months in 2014 and there was significant road damage, but over the months the birding improved as more and more birds arrived in the area.

2014-2015 Winter Finch Forecast

Ron Pittaway has published his winter finch forecast for the winter of 2014-2015. When Purple Finches leave Ontario in October and November, they return in mid-April to mid-May to breed. At bird feeders redpolls prefer nyger seeds in silo feeders. At feeders purples prefer sunflower seeds. Red Crossbills. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL.

Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes – Coracina novaehollandiae are a common bird species around our home in Broome, Western Australia. They are often nearby and breed locally, but we don’t always have them at the water. The water drips down constantly and many different birds visit throughout the day.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding season starts early!

This is not surprising at all due to the fact that we have monitored the Pied Oystercatcher breeding success (or lack thereof ) since 2000 along a twenty three kilometre stretch of beach and it is very rare for any of the sixteen pairs to succeed. This pair of Pied Oystercatchers has been successful on one occasion and that was in 2012.
