I have followed the breeding activity of the Pied Oystercatchers in Broome along Cable Beach since July 2000 when I found the first nest site and the birds have continued to use the same territories, though there have been some partner changes. A second egg was laid the following day and the two eggs hatched at the end of the month.

In the mid-1970s, a local breeder was burglarized and a few of his birds escaped, after which the breeder released his remaining stock of about 50 birds 1. This is an animated map made from Christmas Bird Count data of Eurasian Collared-Dove sightings from 1987 through 1997 2. In warm climates they can breed year round.

I’m already looking up birding tours of Borneo and pricing airfares. Borneo, the authors say, is under-birded.

The Eurasian Wryneck is the woodpecker that doesn’t look like a woodpecker, the bird with the portmanteau name that is also a medical condition (and which may remind some people of a Nora Ephron essay). A few weeks ago I introduced you to the first pair of Pied Oystercatchers to start to breed this year. We have to hope that vehicles stop driving beyond the high tide mark and that the eggs hatch out in twenty eight days’ time. The nest site has been used in previous years and if it fails they will lay a second clutch of eggs.
