Companhia das Lezírias ‘Tyto alba’ Vinhas Protegidas Tinto (2013)

10,000 Birds

The 2013 ‘Tyto alba’ from Companhia das Lezírias is a red wine from Portugal’s Tejo region, and – as you may have guessed from its name – there is in fact a Barn Owl ( Tyto alba ) on the label. With its ghostly visage and bloodcurdling, otherworldly screeches, the Barn Owl seemed like the perfect bird for a Hallowe’en wine.

Birding Villahermosa’s Urban Parks

10,000 Birds

So Eduardo set aside the afternoon to show me some of the city, and take me birding in two city parks. Being a westerner — raised in California, and now living in western Mexico — I was perhaps most excited about the migratory birds that breed in eastern North America. Birding Wawushan, Sichuan

10,000 Birds

In many ways, birding Wawushan is a nightmare for a solitary and crowd-hating birder like me. An unnamed bird guide called them “avoidless tourists”, which sums it up rather nicely. So, all this makes birding this place an occasionally less than pleasant experience.

Learning the Birds: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

Although Henslow’s had been reliably found in nearby Sharon Springs for many years, the last documented sighting was in 2008, and the sighting startled longtime birders, waking them up to the fact that breeding sites in the state were rapidly being lost.
