Ditto for the feral Muscovy Ducks , though they are a bit less nice. The most likely bird would be Fulvous Whistling-Duck which I tried for and dipped on last year thanks to the refuge that was good for them being closed for hunting on the day that I made the attempt. Nanday Parakeets are nice , but introduced. But it will in January!

Oddly enough, the Common Redpoll ( Acanthis flammea ), my first ever twitch back in the winter of 2009, was spotted within a mile or so from the Snow Bunting on the same road in McArthur. This leads me to my third twitch for the celebrated Falcated Duck ( Anas falcata ) at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in January of 2012.

I’d only ever seen Garganey once before, way back in 2009 in Kazakhstan. The little tiny duck with the white supercilium was ours! Anthony had spotted the bird back in the reeds and announced it only to see a Wood Duck swim out. But I included a Wood Duck for scale! After all, we now knew the bird was still present.

This cold weather and snow does not seem to have much effect on the huge number of ducks and geese, but the smaller song birds, all seem to wake up much later in the days, and only after it has warmed up a bit.
