Garganey in Australia

Last week I mentioned the Tufted Duck that had suddenly appeared in Australia and it is not the only vagrant duck to have chosen to reside in Australia at the moment. There had also been an increase in bird numbers since the previous survey in 2008/2009 and the number of birds had doubled. A pair of Garganey with a Grey Teal.

Australian Shelduck near Broome

On May 2nd we bush walked to an ephemeral lake approximately 55 kilometres/34 miles from Broome with my Mum, who also enjoys birds and walking, to find more ducks present than on our previous visit a couple of weeks ago. Looking across to the far side of the lake we noticed a very large duck and it was swimming close to the edge.

A pair of Ferruginous Ducks , two Purple Herons …. It was May 2009 and we were canoeing the Jojkica branch opposite the downtown Belgrade. From a dry tree above the river branch came the deep and throaty call of a pair of Common Ravens. European Pond Terrapins resting on a floating log.
