No question about it being a woodpecker – a most beautiful one at that! This Red-necked Woodpecker gave us a good look before gliding to a slightly further tree. No longer than a minute after we parted ways with the Red-headed Woodpecker , we heard another light tapping overhead.

Once upon a time in Bojcinska Forest

During WWII, the forest was used as a base of the local Partisan squad (the communist resistance), hiding in subterranean shelters. Some of those shelters are still around. Middle and Great Spotted Woodpeckers as well as the Eurasian Green Woodpecker were heard. And into the forest we go.

But the Kentish Plover was sheltering its young under its body, and the Little Ringed Plover was incubating an egg — right in the middle of downtown Madrid! Iberian Green Woodpecker, Madrid, Spain. Mexico has a good number of greenish or rusty Woodpeckers. I just haven’t seen any of them.

Arivaca Lake- The last stop before Mexico

The layout of the lake has many small fingers that provide shelter, shallow water and many dense areas of Willow and Cottonwood trees. Gila Woodpeckers and Ladder-backed Woodpeckers are seen in the Cottonwood trees, especially near the boat dock. Here is one of our local Ladder-backed Woodpeckers.
