Arivaca Lake- The last stop before Mexico

This 90 acre lake, managed by Arizona Fish and Wildlife is about a 45 mile drive from Tucson, and 9 miles from Mexico, as the Chihuahuan Raven flies. The layout of the lake has many small fingers that provide shelter, shallow water and many dense areas of Willow and Cottonwood trees. Here is one of our local Ladder-backed Woodpeckers.

Birding or Birdwatching? A Backyard Realization

I stitched away as I watched the Red-bellied Woodpecker scatter the smaller Chipping Sparrows and Carolina Chickadees as it glided down for a few seed morsels. The feeder dangles from a clothesline between two pine trees, beckoning a range of bird varieties. Nothing was on my agenda for that afternoon. The emphasis was on discovery.

North Cave Wetlands

The nature reserve is really well managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust with numerous hides and wheelchair access to much of the reserve. The nature reserve is constantly evolving and although part of it is a former sand quarry it has been carefully developed to encourage wildlife. Well done Yorkshire Wildlife Trust!

Danum Valley: Simply the Best

That’s a threatened habitat, and one much sought after by wildlife enthusiasts. Some of the birds were astonishingly confiding, including a Rufous -capped Babbler foraging for insects, a tiny Rufous Piculet ( a diminutive type of woodpecker) and a very bold Black-and-yellow Broadbill.
