Some animals are injured and killed by wildfires. Since their habitat has been destroyed, wildlife become displaced and must spend more time searching for food, water and shelter. A fire might kill weak birds or, depending on the time of year, claim nestlings. So what do these facts mean for our wildlife?

Every other year or so, we experience the lightest of frosts, nothing killing, and our warmest temperatures (in the 80s and 90s) occur in late spring. It doesn’t seem to offer food or shelter for birds; but, being the tallest tree on the block, is an important stopover for lots of species. Mostly, we don’t let them.

Lacking the benefit of heated shelters, birds must heed that warning or perish. It might not look frightening to a birder but if we could ask pigeons, woodpeckers, and other birds how they felt abut the Bicolored Hawk, we would see their eyes go wide with fear and their feathers tremble. It’s delicious to the eye is what it is!

Women gathered their long skirts and hurried for the shelter of stores. A foot deep by some accounts, it killed what life was left in the forest. I would dearly love to see an Ivory-billed Woodpecker, and I think our Carrie deserves to observe a Great Auk. Children screamed and ran for home. Horses bolted.

Filling the niche of the woodpecker here they use their small and long bills to explore and hammer through rotting wood and bark for insects. The sheltered bays of the Coromandel are home to another endemic, the Southern Merganser. There are few sights on Earth more astonishing than the largest flying predator making its kill.
