My Subtropical Bird Garden

Every other year or so, we experience the lightest of frosts, nothing killing, and our warmest temperatures (in the 80s and 90s) occur in late spring. It doesn’t seem to offer food or shelter for birds; but, being the tallest tree on the block, is an important stopover for lots of species. Mostly, we don’t let them.

It might not look frightening to a birder but if we could ask pigeons, woodpeckers, and other birds how they felt abut the Bicolored Hawk, we would see their eyes go wide with fear and their feathers tremble. Women gathered their long skirts and hurried for the shelter of stores. A foot deep by some accounts, it killed what life was left in the forest. I would dearly love to see an Ivory-billed Woodpecker, and I think our Carrie deserves to observe a Great Auk. Children screamed and ran for home. Horses bolted.
