We have a real love of turtles, so it is always great to hear of people helping care for them. Recently the SeaWorld Orlando animal rescue team received two hawksbill turtle hatchlings that were about two months old. This turtle was covered with algae and fauna, as seen in the photo.

SeaWorld aquarist Jenny Albert covers up a “cold stunned” endangered green turtle to keep the animal warm at SeaWorld’s Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. This influx of turtles gives the park’s Sea Turtle Rescue Program more than 1,000 turtles rescued since its inception in 1980. The SeaWorld team does great work!

a couple sea turtles, and a jumping sailfish but no birds. Including this one perched on a sea turtle. At first, the birds were absent, it was just that one shearwater, a sad lost Eastern Kingbird flying low over the waves, and groups of Brown Boobies making a beeline to feeding grounds. Were there going to be any birds?

Pied Oystercatcher breeding area-July to October Pied Oystercatcher sitting on eggs-July We are now at the time of year when Flatback Turtles come ashore to lay their eggs along our coastline and they usually do it during the night around high tide. So, our beach nesting has changed from birds nesting to turtles nesting!

My next surprise as I headed along the beach on my bicycle were some really distinct tracks that led from the sea at high tide late the night before and entered the sea immediately next to me. A Flatback Turtle was just returning to the sea after spending most of the night nesting above the high tide mark.

Key West Wildlife Center takes mostly birds, but will rescue mammals, marine mammals, and both land and sea turtles as well. They kept the hawk for a few days, as he was weak and dehydrated from migration, then released him as well. Last year, 4,000 young Peregrine Falcons swept through the Keys on their way north.

But why did 60 dead endangered turtles wash up over three weeks? Still, though, 60 sea turtles over 3 weeks? But so far, it looks like the oil spill is not to blame. And what about the dead dolphin? They also say low oxygen levels are common this time of year due to changes in temperature. Seems like an awful lot.

Officials reported 48 marine mammals, mostly dolphins, and 87 dead sea turtles during the first two months alone. We documented the relocation of several turtle nests. Turtles continue to die at significant rates in the Gulf of Mexico. The babies that hatched from these eggs were released on Florida’s east coast.
