Great Gray Owl: Seeing the Ghost

There are birds more prized by North American birders than the Great Gray Owl , but not many*. Like many cold-weather creatures, the Great Gray Owl can to some extent trade altitude for latitude. We made our way to the spot that the owl had, according to our guides, last been seen. The owl wasn’t there.

Lisbon’s Lezirias in Winter

The Skylarks and Northern Wheatears in the barren fields attract all four European species of harrier (but no Montagu’s for Christmas, sorry). Merlin and Short-Eared Owl are almost a “dead cert” in winter. Bluethroats , Cetti’s and Chiffchaff can be found in the brush alongside the canals and the estuary.

The day started out with some typical monsoon-season cloudiness, so my first photos suffered a bit from low lighting. Black-chested Sparrow is one of Paso Ancho’s flagship species. Finally, I’ll let you see some of my encounter with an expressive Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl. A Golden Vireo showed up.

So in addition to having to suffer through that awkward teenage period of feeling like it doesn’t fit in with the other kids, the adolescent Red-tailed Hawk doesn’t even fit in with its own species. The Burrowing Owl is one amazingly angry bird. The anger, it burns hot in this one. The bird that started it all.
