It is hard to imagine any birder not liking woodpeckers – they are the “motherhood and apple pie” of the avian world. The Bearded Woodpecker (Mkuze, South Africa) does not really look any more bearded than many other woodpeckers. It is the most widespread woodpecker in Africa, claims the HBW.

Yes, you read that correctly – it was seemingly reversing the laws of gravity. Absolutely nothing prepared me for woodcreepers, however.

Black-chested Sparrow is one of Paso Ancho’s flagship species. The apparent deliciousness of this fruit gave me my best photos yet of the beautiful (and noisy) Yellow-winged Cacique , as well as a hungry female Gray-cheeked Woodpecker. And I, for one, choose not to let the lack of a few species ruin my enjoyment of many more.

My personal preference is the block prints, which perfectly capture the spirits of western woodpeckers, jays, and even a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, but there is a Canada Jay watercolor at the end that would look very nice in my living room. And, John Laws widely praised The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds (2012) is mysteriously missing.
