It is hard to imagine any birder not liking woodpeckers – they are the “motherhood and apple pie” of the avian world. The Bearded Woodpecker (Mkuze, South Africa) does not really look any more bearded than many other woodpeckers. It is the most widespread woodpecker in Africa, claims the HBW.

The scientific species name of the Golden-throated Barbet is franklinii , commemorating Capt. The HBW section on this species’ behavior mostly repeats the phrase “more information needed” Though of course scientists, hungry for grants and topics, say that all the time. Ok, I made that up. Then, on to nuthatches.

Not all the birds, of course, but many of the distinctive and conspicuous species. Woodpeckers were quite prominent, both in non-fiction works like the encyclopedia and in entertainment. Yes, you read that correctly – it was seemingly reversing the laws of gravity. Absolutely nothing prepared me for woodcreepers, however.

In the end, I ended up with 9 species, 4 of which were new to the list, the Black-crowned Sparrow Lark, White-checked Bulbo, House Crow , and the Indian Silverbill. This leg of the trip was for the most part all about my father-in-law. Speaking of Bank Swallows , here is one of those family groups. Scotland Species: 94.

Because I have birded southern California in winter several times there weren’t any of the normally occurring birds that I could get within easy reach of my in-laws house in Orange County. I ruled this option out because I have had terrible luck with the species and because I wasn’t sure enough of the bird’s exact location.

Over 3,200 photographs have been used, most showing species in their habitats. There is also text, distribution maps, a dark red bar “warning” about similar looking rare species, and conservation symbols. So, how do you find the species account for Kestrel if falcons are not placed between woodpeckers and parakeet?
