This large woodpecker is one of Cuba’s rarest birds, with a small population of 600-800 individuals, who are mostly seen on the Zapata Peninsula.** They nest in palms, and we found a small area where we observed several couples investigating and preparing nest holes.

Other quality birds seen in the park that morning included the endemic Wattled Ibis, Banded Snake Eagle , migrant Pallid Harriers, Nubian Woodpecker and Brown Babbler. Mago National Park certainly deserved more exploration and I wished we had time to investigate the well appointed campsites along the Mago River.

Nothing showed except for a Lineated Woodpecker which I only saw as it flew off. We stopped periodically to investigate various patches along the road. A Guianan Trogon called in the distance but we continued, aware of the distance yet to be covered. Grey-headed Kite. Broad-winged Hawk. Slowly, we continued. Up, then down.

This Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker in particular is a species I would like to get much better photos of. On the other hand, these exact same photographers – by buying food and asking for accommodation – also make the birds valuable for the local villagers who might otherwise be tempted to trap the birds and sell them.

Richard noticed a variety of pipits that foraged on this grass playing field and after some observation decided that further investigation was called for, as one type seemed larger and longer tailed than any pipits with which he was familiar, and they occurred in large flocks, also an unusual feature for South African pipits.
