Nowhere in India have I seen broiler horror-chicken like those sold in supermarkets back home. They belong to a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus (like four-legged Greco/Roman crested helmets) and are my second race of boar seen in India, while I still remain the only Serbian birder who has never seen one closer to home!

In fact, I have had some visitors from India remark to me that “there are no birds here” – a remark I can understand given the huge number of birds encountered even in big Indian cities such as Mumbai or Delhi. The Light-vented Bulbul is one of the three or four most common bird species in Shanghai.

And here in Europe, they are the real deal, an indigenous species and not domesticated animals gone wild. This was only my second time ever to observe this subspecies (the first time was here as well), two other subspecies I have observed in India. Finally, 24 species in Annex I of the EU Bird Directive were recorded in this area.

I observed this species in the Little Rann of Kutch in India and since then, have been burning with desire to see them back home. The world record holder is the town of Kikinda, further north, with 700 birds in their town square which has recently become an officially protected owl habitat – a small, urban nature reserve.

But, from the existing data, the authors have drawn a different conclusion – there is no proof that the breeding population ever existed, that the south of Africa was beyond the species range and that that all observations were of vagrant individuals. During my lifetime, this species was rare in my native Serbia, too.

Furthermore, the total population in Hemis National Park is estimated at 50-60 individuals, making the park an important genetic reservoir for this species which is classified on the IUCN’s Red Data List as Endangered. It is accessed through the high altitude (3,500m) city of Leh, capital of Ladakh in Jammu-Kashmir State, north west India.

The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. The guide covers 1,433 species, the number of birds documented at the end of 2014, the cutoff point for the book.

Storks are typically viewed as wetland species and whilst some storks are restricted to aquatic habitats, others are not. This is another wetland species that nests in sometimes huge colonies atop trees bordering rivers and lakes.

The species name athertoni is derived from Lt. Atherton (1797-1827), a naturalist (whatever that means exactly) and a member of the British Army in India. The Ashy Tailorbird is a good example of the different perspectives of describing a bird – while the English name focuses on the body of the bird, the Latin species name ruficeps refers to the rufous head. The split makes the bird one of the six species endemic to Sabah, Borneo ( source ), four of which I saw during my week at Sepilok.
