I was able to convince Murray Hunt to take us out for a morning cruise on the Daintree River, despite late notice, and that it was a Sunday morning that looked to be really crappy weather. This Male Shiny Flycatcher showed up right at the end of the trip. This Little Bronze Cuckoo , is also know as the Gould’s Cuckoo.

I can state without hesitation that this species is unquestionably the most attractive parrot I have ever seen in my entire life. However, if we accept that some old reports were this species and not the very similar and easily confused Bat Falcon , it’s pretty likely that a few Orange-breasteds did hunt for Band-tailed Pigeons , parakeets, parrots, and other birds over the canopy of rainforests at the base of the Costa Rican mountains.

During the right time of year, the relatively large and deep blue Caribbean Martins accompany both species of swifts as they drink from both the river and the pool. Many large trees dot the surroundings, and the bright orange flowers of the immortelle attract brightly colored Red-legged Honeycreepers and Orange-winged Parrots.

Not every huge white bird was a parrot though, and the lake also had a Great Egret among the Australian Grebes , Eurasian Coots and Dusky Moorhens. The grassy areas were also patrolled by Laughing Kookaburras , which engaged in the typical watch and wait hunting methods of the kingfisher family, and the engaging Willie Wagtail.

On a quick browse, here are some facts I learned: Melanin helps to resist bacteria that attack feathers; most parrots are left-footed and this is associated with problem-solving; some birds nest in two different places in the same year. The bush on the left has been burned recently, the unburnt right is much taller and dominated by Casuarina. I’ve had a couple of great encounters with this species hunting lizards and frogs in the more open woodland areas, and of course it’s evocative call is a common sound anywhere there are enough trees.

More importantly, it is a fantastic area to watch birds in its own right. Graceful Honeyeater ( Meliphaga gracilis ) Metallic Starling colony ( Aplonis metallica ) I got my Platypus just before dark; it was much smaller than I expected but utterly enthralling as it hunted along the river bank.

I’m not sure if I already was claustrophobic , or if the circumstances merely traumatized me to the point I became one, right there and then. Much more exciting was the Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot that shot past, followed, on the rather slippery path to the caves, by several Rufous-winged Philentomas. A Bat Hawk hunting bats.

Early morning is of course birding prime time and a pre-breakfast stroll around our lodge produced sightings of the lovely Orange-bellied Parrot , which we tracked down to a nesting hole right next to the restaurant. Splashes of color were added by cryptic Bruce’s Green Pigeons and more raucous Abyssinian and Lilac-breasted rollers.
