Given this Blog is 10,000 Birds I would like to share, over time, some of the 350 plus Sunshine Coast birds and my favourite birding locations plus some mammals and other critters of my greater area. We were also lucky enough to see a beautiful pair of Sacred Kingfishers hunting along the coastal edge. One is pictured below.

The Aruban Burrowing Owl hunts primarily from the ground, hopping and running after lizards, insects, and small mammals. The added publicity – the bird now appears on Aruba currency and stamps – will draw attention to needed conservation and protection efforts.

When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there. Photographed within Beljarica: six wild boars by Snezana Panjkovic.

” Blue-bearded Bee-eaters seem to have a pretty clever hunting strategy. He also served with the 13th Light Dragoons, fighting with them at Waterloo (though he can only have been about 18 at that point – I guess child protection laws were somewhat lax at that time).

The gamekeeper drives by, I wave my greetings but do not mention the jackals I am observing at the moment: this animal is not protected in Serbia and is allowed for killing year-round (one may say “hunting” instead, but I am having problems trying to spot the difference). All this happens less than a mile from the nearest houses.

Wildlife conservation is concerned with protecting wildlife at the level of species or perhaps population. New Zealand has been the recipient of a higher than average number of introduced species, in particular a range of mammals from elk to mice. This is a very serious business here in New Zealand.

Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). Even in protected areas of north-east India, prey densities are very low. It is too early to show.

In parts of the Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia, from which I have just returned, Geladas have been protected from persecution for some time. Mammals Ethiopia Gelada' they are the most terrestrial primate after humans. This has resulted in their populations returning to natural levels and their fear of humans being curtailed.

It’s the boar hunting season. The next morning is for the Kerkini Lake, one of the youngest national parks of Greece, protected only ten years ago, in 2006 and inhabited by 11 amphibian, 27 reptilian, 44 mammal and 312 bird species. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start. Enough of the mountains.

Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. . Now that the colony is off limits for hunting, the population has grown and the village is benefitting tremendously from entry and guide fees, and a school is being built courtesy of conservation funds.

This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW). Tianmashan bonus mammal: a Raccoon Dog – though it looks a lot like a raccoon, it is actually more closely related to foxes than to raccoons. And it does not even live in reeds. The White’s Thrush will keep pretending to be a reptile.

As the name suggests, the National Bison Range is mostly known for its large mammals. Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears.
