So I thanked Melissa, thanked Renee, then I hold on to your hat--thanked my sheep. But it was a gratitude that came from acknowledging I was eating the flesh of an animal, and in order for me to do that, Melissa and I had worked very hard to be sustainable and humane farmers" (252). Jenny sent me a link to a remarkably-ironic story that was very tough to get through. Remember Catherine Friend, who wrote Compassionate Carnivore ?

Their claim is that what has become the customary way to take sentient nonhumans from babyhood to untimely death is not humane. No one needs to eat sentient beings, so it's not as if these "farmers" are providing a valuable service to humanity. It allows you to swoop in with an alternative to the disgraceful human behavior that is factory farming and provide a kindler, gentler way to partake of the flesh of others.

The University of Puerto Rico, an "1862" LGU founded in 1900, operates a slaughter facility killing small ruminants -- typically goats and sheep, cattle being large ruminants. We humans, herbivores like ruminants, are fine with one stomach -- we don't eat the really tough stuff like grass. Achieving humane treatment of animals is inconceivable with our big, popular universities teaching the opposite! Responsible Policies for Animals Members & Friends!

Archaeology has demonstrated that humans were crafting collars for their animals at least 7000 years ago and the possibility that this is a conservative estimate is large. Training collars should always be used with an observant human present to prevent accidental harm.

Suppose there was a breed of sheep that became very ill when the sheep’s fleece was removed; they did not function normally. Animal Ethics

To pretend that in our complex modern society, where responsibilities are so closely interwoven, it is possible for any individual to cultivate "a perfect character," and stand like a Sir Galahad above his fellows—this is the false ideal of consistency which it is the first business of a genuine reformer to put aside; for no human being can do any solid work without frequently convicting himself of inconsistencies when consistency is stereotyped into a formula.

So why would they not insist that the cow that became their steak was treated humanely? To the Editor: Your Feb.
