Although it is right on a busy road once you walk into the lobby it is peaceful and quiet. Of course, it was busting with birds and got us many firsts with White-throated Towhees , Berylline Hummingbirds , and a Gray-backed Woodpecker. On the way there we swung by a seemingly random patch in a field.

As it turned out, I was the only travel writer of the group. Looking in that direction, we soon discover another LSE on the ground and, in a bush right in front of us, one lovely male Subalpine Warbler. Picture 7: Grey-headed Woodpecker – Picus canus. This time, we were looking for woodpeckers.

To make sure our staff, volunteers, and members stayed safe, we asked birders to stick to their backyards, and we aggregated tallies across groups: staff vs. members. The Red-bellied Woodpecker. Adding my birds to the 23 other staff members who birded that day, the Audubon Florida team recorded 183 species.

The fleeting photo of an Ivory-billed Woodpecker tugs at and flies away with a piece of the heart, that final image of a Slender-billed Curlew is difficult to look at, it’s a stab deep inside. Posters of three groups of birds are currently available; toucans, trogons, and hummingbirds.

They are large groups of birds of all different kinds of species. Cardinal Woodpecker. Also in large flocks were black Common Scimitarbills , part of a group of tree living relatives of the hoopoes that look like pretty much no other bird on Earth. Fortunately, if I couldn’t go to the bush, the bush could come to me.

I was recently reminded of the rich avifauna found in the Caribbean lowlands while guiding a small group of birders from Texas. Often seen at the right sites. Chestnut-colored Woodpecker. Several species of woodpeckers occur in this birdy part of Costa Rica. One of those few is the Chestnut-colored Woodpecker.

Ruili is a Chinese city right on the border to Myanmar, and a major border crossing. When I last visited the town almost 10 years ago, it had a Wild West feel, and Wikipedia claims that it is “an important location for trade with Myanmar, in both legal and illegal goods and services” but it seemed pretty tame to me this time.

I know these winds had a lot of the birds all settled in, and not moving much, but right off the bat, I got a new Lifer, in a pair of Nuttall’s Woodpeckers. Here is my new Nuttall’s Woodpecker. The new lifers are the Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Lincoln Sparrow, Oak Titmouse , and the Wrentit! The 11th of February.

Where a birder goes in the Caribbean determines which birds are seen including toy-like todies, Carib hummingbirds, cool pigeons, quail-doves, unique avian families and outrageous woodpeckers. White-collared was the most common but we also had many very good looks at Chestnut-collared along with a few Gray-rumped , two Lesser Swallow-tailed right at the end of the day, and views of both elusive species- White-chinned and Spot-fronted Swifts ! In the morning and even during mid-day, dozens of swifts coursed through the skies.

This is where Gila Woodpecker and Yellow-breasted Chat meet Squirrel Cuckoo , Bat Falcon , and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. It gets a bit easier once we leave the unholy group of leaf warblers. Among the more goth-oriented stars at Nanhui (think Andrew Eldrige rather than Andrew Ridgeley) are the Hair-crested Drongo … (sometimes it can be fun to pretend to be a woodpecker). Pale-legged Leaf Warbler ? and the Black Drongo.

I’d love to have known where and when the Great Spotted Woodpecker in my photograph below was ringed, but though the ring is clearly visible, the number stamped on it isn’t. With its striking combination of colour rings I suspected that it would be easy to find out more about this particular bird, and I was right.

You could add Middle Spotted and Grey-headed Woodpeckers to the list. Syrian Woodpecker is a species of forest edges or open woodland and parks; it doesn’t go into closed canopy forest. In the city, it avoids deeper and larger forests (a domain of the next two species), but visits small groups of trees or tree-lined streets.

This area specifically is renowned for Tucuman Parrots, Yellow-collared Mackaws, Green-cheeked Parakeet, White-throated Antpitta, Creamed-back Woodpecker, Blue-capped Puffleg and Slender-tailed Woodstar, White-bellied Hummingbird , and others. We were welcomed by a group of Plush-crested Jays that kept diving into a large garbage can.

Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge. The first part of the week, we parked the RV at a campground right on the water, of Dog Lake, 20 miles southwest of Lakeview, Oregon. I only ran across this one Clark’s Grebe mixed in with in the groups of Westerns.

On my first trip there, I had the good luck to find the best sites right away. I was very lucky to quickly see a group of Banded Quails (a species only found in Mexico’s Tierra Caliente) that first trip, as well as the similarly-named Banded Wren , with its haunting song. I don’t have to tell you which sparrow is which!

In addition to the Violet Saberwing , just as we were leaveing the lodge, this Scintillant Hummingbird landed right next to the door way. The stay De Silva Biological Station, while well worth it, was a little bit more than we wanted to budget for, so the next best thing was staying right next door.

After filling our water bottles at the clear mountain spring, the group splits and the majority continue on foot across the high pass to find many signs of bear presence in the area – scratching posts, scat (above), footprints; while the two of us continue by car along the very good final section of macadam prior to the village. Ironically, thanks to the non-sustainable, land poisoning agriculture seen en route, there is a straight, fast, good road that zooms right on up to Los Chiles, the closest town to Cano Negro. I guess that isn’t too surprising since a quick 30 minute float down the river goes right into Nicaragua. We had several Least Bitterns.

This nice little group of shorebirds, including a Killdeer, three Long-billed Dowitchers and a Spotted Sandpipers all got together for a photo. My first ever Gamble’s Quail were feeding right next to the picnic area, and alongside the visitors center building, I spotted a thrasher. Right in our camp, we found Ladder-backed Woodpeckers.

The bird was a little harder to find than I expected; I needed to triangulate the sounds of the call and finally, after standing and looking and walking around the tree where the bird had to be calling from, I took a deep breath, looked again, and there it was right in front of me, actually at eye level. A Roadrunner crossed in front of me.
