We are looking up in the sky, trying to identify the small group of swifts that are circling over head, when we are joined by a young man with his camera and tripod. The house we were staying in was surrounded by Howler Monkeys all night, who really work as a great 5:30 alarm, if that happens to be the time you want to get up!

We were met by several Cattle Egret in beautiful breeding plumage feeding on the grass right next to the train station. There were a couple of people with large cameras and then several school groups. There was something “not right” about it. The children appeared to be mostly interested in seeing the crocodiles!

In the Orinoco, the largest observed groups number 30, but average is just above five. We sailed right into a group of more than a dozen Hoatzins (cover photo, by Tyler Ficker) with their orange mohawks and blue facial skin. To the right of the toucan, a Scaled Pigeon still rests comfortably, while one of many pairs of Orange-winged Parrots flies past in the background. Dusky-capped Flycatcher (lower right) and a Rufous-tailed Jacamar. We also saw a small group of Guianan Red Howler Monkeys feeding nearby. Turquoise Tanager.

The bird foraged on fruit in the upper understory, moving the vegetation almost as much as a monkey does. Luck always plays a role for seeing these monster goshawks but so does looking for them in the right places. In a year of megas, this was one of the top birds for sure. I was fortunate to spend time scanning open fields, wetlands, and the inlet separating Hong Kong from China with this large group of friendly and avid avian observers. What is a day of birding without scanning malodorous mud, right? An early group of about 15 from the hide at Mai Po. Guests are usually welcome for a nominal fee.

Most of the tourists, of which there are quite a few, opt to go on the tours provided by the Supporters, so by walking away quickly from the slowly coalescing groups we were able to lose the crowds quickly. Wicked, right? You start hearing and catching glimpses of birds as soon as you land, particularly the fast moving Tui.

These truly are the gentle giants of the forest and with a little careful manoeuvring on our wooden platform; we were all enjoying great scope views of a mixed group of beautiful males with their giant jet black casques and pale blue throat wattles alongside the ginger punk-haired females.
