In addition to sharks, barracuda, rays, and fishes, we had also spotted Double-crested Cormorants , Brown Pelicans , and Magnificent Frigatebirds. As we pulled to a stop at the sand bar and hopped out into the hip-deep water, I literally couldn’t believe my eyes: a flock of American White Pelicans.

We got our chance on a guided fishing tour out to the mangrove islands, a thirty minute boat ride off the beach. We were all set for a full day of combining our two loves: fishing and birding. Masked Cardinal This Green Kingfisher stared at the water for several minutes, and then proceeded to pounce on a fish that was so close we almost got splashed! They all coexist harmoniously, apart from the fish perspective that is. Due to the plethora of bird species around, invariably we were to experience something breathtaking.

Gulls, terns and pelicans are all subjected to the predatory nature of the frigatebirds. Just about the time the Osprey got its catch airborne, a small flock of American White Pelicans came screaming in, in an attempt to get that fish away from the Osprey. I have never seen any kind of pelican exhibit this kind of behavior.

Dalmatian Pelicans and Eurasian Spoonbills were flying above the beach, sometimes above the hotel garden, while Golden Oriole and Scops Owl could be heard. We were based at the end of Porto Lagos, overlooking the sea and constantly having a salty sea breeze. I do not remember such salt-scented air anywhere else in Greece.

Terns, gulls, pelicans, gannets, and ducks all made their way past and all were digiscoped to within an inch of their lives. On the first attempt it the bird did manage to miss but on the second try it nabbed a fish. Here the fish has been spun so it is being carried sideways. But none were quite as fun to shoot as Osprey.

The next one, the lagoon of Vatatsa (at the eastern side of the Valtos Bay), offered a lot more egrets, one Squacco Heron , two distant Dalmatian Pelicans and quite a few little things chirping from their hiding places in the tamarisk bushes by the road. A few moored boats with piles of fishing nets, but no people. Recommendation.

The water popped with rising menhaden, and giant Brown Pelicans dove with watery crashes after them. Belted Kingfishers looked for fish from atop snags, and Ospreys joined them in the darker recesses of the canopy. Flocks of Bonaparte’s Gulls , dotted with Royal Terns , flew past our boat.

Brown Pelicans and Double-crested Cormorants soared across the sky, while American White Pelicans rested in the shallow waters. In addition to bobbing pelicans and cormorants, I spotted a mass of Northern Gannets. After leaving the group, I pulled into a boat launch with a great view of a marshy, mud flat area near the beach.

Several Glossy Ibises , two dozen Gull-billed Terns and Collared Pratincoles , a few Dalmatian Pelicans , Black Terns , Dunlins …. A Belted Kingfisher chattered as it dive-bombed fish from the air; Willets and Spotted Sandpipers scurried amidst the mud. Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons and Tricolored Herons dotted the shallow water. Anhingas sat on bare limbs of dead tree trunks, while Osprey soared overhead. The famous lighthouse at St. Marks Wildlife Refuge.

Brown Pelicans and Laughing Gulls still appeared as silhouettes in the dim light, flying or resting on old wooden pilings out in the waves. Brown Pelicans perched on wooden pilings. Some rested on the sand while others twisted in the wind, diving dramatically for tiny fish or boisterously calling back and forth to each other.

My husband and I had been fishing nearby for most of the day, making the short 45 minute hop over to the state park near Port St. Fairly exhausted after a day of fishing, we had a delicious dinner at nearby Coneheads before quickly falling asleep. Brown Pelicans were the most numerous birds, flapping against the wind, diving for lunch, or floating along on the gentle waves. Standing at the front of the boat, he threw his trusty cast net off the side, pulling up menhaden, croaker, and even one large shrimp to use later as bait for snapper fishing.

Located about 20 miles from Lakeview, Oregon, and sitting at an elevation of 5100 feet, this 208 acre lake is home to many species of fish, including Largemouth Bass, Crappie and Bluegill. Chum can be a variety of substances, from fish oil to popcorn. Stale bread, vomit, suet, bait-fish, and slurry are some of the things I have seen used for chum and that list is by no means exhaustive. Shearwaters and storm-petrels seem to do the same, though reports abound of both coming in and feeding on fish-oil.

By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once. Yet, my best bird was a Common Kingfisher in a quick and low fight above a wheat field – I have never seen anything like it.
