There are advantages to being a “Pelican Partner” for International Bird Rescue ! First, you get to tour one of their California centers , you get a special opportunity to see a Pelican getting its final medical exam and numbered leg band, plus you get the honor of releasing one, or in my case, two of their rehabilitated pelicans!

Blue Jays called near the boat ramp, and a lone, juvenile Brown Pelican paddled lazily in the lapping waves. We didn’t have any set course; I sat behind the wheel of the center console while Brian used the trolling motor to cast after fish. That my data would be used in a global citizen science event?

Pel’s Fishing Owl, where were you? The Black Heron – besides looking rather cool, though not really very black – also has an interesting fishing technique. In a 1946 paper , it is called “under-wing fishing”, while nowadays the term “canopy fishing” seems to be preferred.

Dedicated to science, conservation, and education, the reserve focuses on the smaller Weeks Bay, which in turn connects to Mobile Bay. The water popped with rising menhaden, and giant Brown Pelicans dove with watery crashes after them. I was touring the reserve for two days, and felt pumped to get out on the water.

Erika is a first year graduate student studying Ecosystem Science and Conservation at Duke. The island contains 80,000 breeding Sooty Terns, in addition to 4,500 breeding Brown Noddies and another 100 breeding pairs of the huge Magnificent Frigatebirds, not to mention pelicans, herons, Black Skimmers , other tern species, and so much more.
